The first in a series of RBA sponsored distinguished speaker presentations at SUNY Rockland Community College took place on June 20, as three experts in the field of New Media held a panel discussion.
Allan Ross, President of A.J. Ross Creative, Tom Christmann, Vice President, New Media, The Journal News and Charles Theiss, Sr. Vice President and Director, Emerging Media Technologies & Business Development, Active International spoke at the event and RBA CEO and President Al Samuels moderated. The event was sponsored by M&T Bank.
Internet marketing strategies were the focus of the presentation as were potential applications of new technologies such as Ipods. Attendees learned that search engines such as Google sell the rights to keywords to certain companies on an hourly basis, to improve their chances of appearing when someone does a search.
About 50 or so people turned out for the presentation.
Feedback from RBA members and RCC staff
Pamela Gerstheimer, of SUNY Rockland’s Center for Personal and Professional Development
It was very informative and truly updated me as to the electronic communication available out there. I didn’t know about the ways of advertising on the Internet and using the search engines, on-line advertising and purchasing keywords. All of that applies to what we do here, as far as having a broader knowledge base. We will eventually apply it to our website.
I found it very interesting how the Journal News goes about sharing their news [on their website]. They are thinking of splitting it up into towns. Yes, I will be seeing more in the distinguished speakers series presentations.
Jennifer Kacak of Smart Money Mortgage Center, Inc.
Actually one of the things that I learned was about purchasing keywords for directing traffic to your website and targeting certain chunks of time during the day to purchase rights to keywords from Google.
Al from AJ Ross stressed the importance of using technology, but to also keep the personal touch by following up with letters and phone calls. Website marketing and email marketing was the highlight more than anything else and they all had their own unique approach to it and how they use it.
Collette Fournier of SUNY Rockland’s Communication Department
The gentleman there from The Journal News talked about advertising and the use of banners on ads. He advised that you have to probably go through professional email companies to do marketing for you, so you can get through firewalls.

He said to expect to pay at least a couple thousand of dollars for a professional website, that you don’t want to skimp on that area because your website is your calling card.
It was interesting when Al Samuels said something about 15 years ago people were trying to get him to use a computer and now today it is a 'must.' Technology is now changing day by day and there is no turning back. Theiss was bringing up that technology is changing every day. It was a nice tie in to the College because CPPD can offer courses for business-people to update skills.
I thought it was a really good collaboration, I think future ones will bring more attendance and this was a tough time of year to start off with something like this. I think the new technology building offers a good setting; the multi-purpose room holds about 160 people.

We learned that even companies in traditional industries need to use some new media and they can’t just rely on what’s worked for them in the past. People need to use combinations in developing effective marketing strategies.
Dates in October of 2006 and January and March of 2007 have been set for future distinguished speaker presentations at SUNY Rockland. High profile persons such as Timothy F. Geithner, President of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and Linda S. Sanford, a Senior Vice President at IBM Corp. and Chair of the Board of the Business Council of New York State are being sought for future presentations. Elected officials from Washington, economists and celebrities also will be sought.
A comprehensive article on the New Media event is in this week’s edition of the Hudson Valley Business Journal.
