State Grants Offered to Increase Broadband Internet Access

New York State recently made an additional $2.5 million available in high tech grants to enhance broadband access.

On July 31 Governor George E. Pataki signed legislation that earmarked an additional $2.5 to Empire State Development’s Wireless Communities and Wired Buildings Grant Program. Governor Pataki announced that, as a result of an overwhelming response to earlier grant programs, the additional money is being made available for projects that provide advanced broadband telecommunications services to businesses.

The grant program has previously supported projects like the ongoing transformation of downtown Albany and the City of Cohoes into ‘Smart Cities’—expected to benefit more than 1,000 local businesses and provide them with wireless web access to the world. Since the initial round of funding in 2001, the Wired/Wireless program has committed over $5.4 million in funding to 74 projects across the state, leveraging over $41 million in matching investment.

"While the Rockland Business Association always has advocated for a county-wide, state-of-the-art broadband system, we recognize the validity of more local networks, as well. Rockland communities and businesses should consider taking advantage of this program. Albany and Cohoes have benefited greatly from their involvement. I believe we could, as well," RBA CEO and President Al Samuels said.

The RBA's Technology Initiative will be spearheading participation by member companies. A special meeting will take place on Thursday, September 7 from 4:00-6:00 PM at Dominican College in Sparkill featuring several leaders who have implemented wifi strategies and providers who have installed them.

"Throughout New York State, wireless internet access can now be found in professional office buildings, in parks, and even on water," Governor Pataki said. "These additional grants will further break down geographical barriers, allowing for communities around the state to conduct commerce with the world. These communities or buildings that have hot spots for web connections will be extending a high-tech welcome to businesses and providing a platform for competing in the global economy."

This is the fifth round of funding available through Empire State Development’s Wireless Communities - Wired Buildings Program. In 2005’s fourth round of the program's grant funding, Empire State Development (ESD) selected 14 wireless projects and seven wired buildings projects across the state.

It is recommended that applications be returned by October 31, 2006.
