Your business can benefit from research
conducted by NASA through the Space
Alliance Technology Outreach Program
(SATOP).
As SATOP celebrates its 11th anniversary, the Rockland Business Association would like to remind you of its partnership with this free service. Funded by NASA, SATOP is a cooperative program between the states of Florida, New Mexico, New York, and Texas, designed to speed the transfer of U.S. Space Program knowledge and technology to America’s private sector; to provide economic benefits to communities; and to raise public awareness of the Space Program.
By giving FREE technology assistance to businesses of all sizes and stripes, SATOP helps them solve their challenges and increase their chances of succeeding. SATOP provides businesses up to 40 hours of free technical assistance utilizing the vast engineering expertise of NASA and participating Alliance Partners (NASA contractors or universities).
Former RBA member Phil Nelson, owner of Citation Manufacturing Company, Inc. in Spring Valley has one request in to SATOP right now and has used their services in the past. He has asked them to review new technological prototypes he has created for his business, which specializes in "sound-masking."
"I have to compliment them in every way possible. I think it is a wonderful, wonderful thing for small business people. Small businesses can have trouble finding someone to give technical assistance. It could be too expensive," Nelson said.
"They go out of their way for you. It’s 40 hours of free help, worth thousands and thousands of dollars. It’s a very important aspect of bringing business to Rockland County," he added.
SATOP's engineering specialties include:
-
Mechanical Engineering:
Design, development, modification, implementation or use of mechanical devices, machinery, or tools.
-
Industrial Engineering:
Managing and improving the economical use of people and equipment through application of cost and work standards and enhancement of the working environment.
-
Materials Engineering: Analysis selection, and utilization of materials including metals, ceramics, polymers, and semiconductor.
-
Structural Engineering: The application of engineering principles to civil engineering problems, including selection of construction materials for structures.
-
Chemical Engineering: Design and manufacture of products, processes, and operations involving basic chemical change.
-
Electrical Engineering: Design, construction, and operation of electrical systems and equipment.
-
Environmental Engineering: Using technology to reduce or prevent the pollution or degradation of the environment.
Through the Rockland Business Association, the SATOP program is open to all types of businesses including manufacturers and industrial firms as well as small businesses and entrepreneurs. Following an initial contact to the RBA, the inquiring company would be visited by a representative of the Center and given assistance in completing a Request for Technical Assistance (RTA).
A SATOP Project Engineer would then contact that company to discuss the submitted request and verify the extent of the technical challenge. The SATOP Project Engineer would work to match the RTA with an engineering team that possesses the necessary expertise. Once an RTA is accepted, the Project Engineer would act as a liaison between the company and the Alliance Partner engineers. Most RTA’s are resolved within 90 days. In 2004 alone, NY SATOP serviced nearly 150 requests for new solutions to problems that affect the everyday lives of people and businesses across the Northeast.
For more information on SATOP, contact the RBA Vice President’s of Planning and Development Roger Scheiber at the RBA Main Office (845)735-2100 or visit www.spacetechsolutions.com.
