Minority and Women Owned Businesses in Rockland to Benefit from New York City Program

Presentation Arranged through the RBA Scheduled at SUNY Rockland for May 11

PEARL RIVER - The Rockland Business Association has collaborated with the New York City Department of Small Business Services to enhance Rockland’s access to the City’s new goals-based Minority and Women’s Business Enterprises program.

On May 11 at 4:30pm, in Room 3214 of the SUNY Rockland Student Union Building, Glenis Henriquez, Director of External Affairs of the Division of Economic and Financial Opportunity, in the New York City Department of Small Business Services, will be making a presentation about the program to Rocklanders.  Henriquez has been reaching out to businesses across the tri-state region.

"This is a great opportunity for the minority and women owned businesses in Rockland. I am proud to help our community take full advantage of it," RBA CEO and President Al Samuels said.  To promote this opportunity, the RBA will be reaching out beyond its membership to such organizations as the Women’s Bar Association, the Black Bar Association and to various Rotary Clubs and Chambers of Commerce.

Mayor Bloomberg and the City Council passed Bill Number 727-A, which created the enterprises program, this winter. It is intended to eliminate gender and racial disparities in City contracting outcomes and increase competition for City contracts.

"Our Administration is committed to creating opportunity for all New Yorkers. Twice in the last four years I have signed Executive Orders directing the Department of Small Business Services to strengthen the City’s minority and women-owned business program," Mayor Bloomberg said in a December 29 press release.

This is not the first time the RBA has helped Rockland’s businesses apply for government contracts. In 2005 the RBA worked with Rockland legislator David Fried to create the Small Business Stimulus Act, which helped Rockland’s small businesses apply for County contracts.
