The Rockland business community will be represented at an important summit on New York education next month.

Making good on his spirited speech at last month's RBA general membership luncheon New York State Commissioner of Education Richard P. Mills has invited RBA President and CEO Al Samuels to attend the Summit on New York Education, November 2 in Albany.

The summit's agenda is to bring together leaders in education, business and community organizations to confront the problem of achievement gaps in public schools along racial and economic lines and how to increase overall performance. The Chancellor of the Board of Regents, Robert M. Bennett, is also sponsoring the event.

"At the summit, we will seek consensus on the aims of The University of the State of New York and on performance targets that can drive greater achievement," Mills said.

"We will ask for commitment . . . to a few actions that, if taken together, will mobilize the unparalleled capacity of USNY to improve results at three points: early education, high school and higher education," he said.

Improving the state's educational infrastructure is vital to its thriving in the global marketplace, he said.

Kati Haycock, President of The Education Trust will give a keynote speech Framing the Educational Challenge and the Imperative for Systems Change. Former West Virginia governor Gaston Caperton (D) and former Health and Human Services Secretary and Wisconsin Governor Tommy Thompson (R) and other experts and officials are expected to attend.

The RBA has long been a proponent of addressing the problems in New York 's education system, a few years ago it was the subject of a Ready, Set, Grow symposium. Samuels said the summit represented a vital opportunity to move things in the right direction.

"I agree with the commissioner 100% when he demands the best of New York's education system. If we do not address this issue with strength we will be in trouble for years to come," Samuels said.
