RBA brings home improvement companies together

The Home Improvement Alliance is the latest subsidiary group created within the RBA community.

Rich Franco of Closet Concepts and Patricia Murphy of Advantage Alarms Inc. are the co-chairs of the alliance, which so far has enlisted over 20 member companies. "It's an excellent opportunity to meet more businesses in the RBA with similar types of needs and clients," Murphy said.

Franco's preliminary mission statement says the group's agenda is, "To foster excellence and integrity among alliance members, to provide opportunities to inform members on government regulations and to serve as a conduit for feedback to the local government on issues vital to the home improvement industry."

The group recently had its first meeting and is still working on a schedule that will work for everybody, Murphy said. Some marketing ideas have already been conceived. The alliance would like to create a website attached to the RBA homepage and create an RBA expo function and print brochures and fliers.

RBA VP of Development Roger Scheiber said the alliance is an embodiment of the RBA's mission and philosophy. "We are trying to give members of the RBA an advantage, helping them to work together and create marketing strategies."

Alliance members would like to help each other understand the different permit regulations that different municipalities have in the county. Minor differences from village to village and town to town can cause a lot of confusion, Murphy said.

Members are concerned about state and county regulations and are interested in using the committee to address these problems. One such issue is that insurance requirements for contractors can be unfair in New York. For example, the famous "ladder law" means if an employee gets drunk on his lunch break and then falls off a ladder and breaks his leg, the business is liable, Scheiber said.
