The Palisades Center Mall keeps growing, new General Manager Peter Janoff is happy to report. Sales growth is steadily increasing while most of country's sales have been stagnant or declining.
In the coming year many new stores are slated to arrive at the Palisades, most notably Macy's, which has merged with and replaced Filene's, and will be vacating the Nanuet Mall.
"We have over 275 tenants, not including major stores. There is constant motion, we are always upgrading," Janoff said.
Stores and restaurants coming next year include 'Café Tutu Tango', a new Japanese Restaurant 'East', an apparel store 'David C.', a soup store derived from the Seinfeld "Soup Nazi” episode called 'Soupman', a Sushi Kiosk, a women's shoes store 'Belle Shoes,' a 24 lane bowling alley and a new children's concept that is both a retail store and a kid's club. The mall recently opened 'Opus, a new concept in entertainment' and a pet shop among other stores.
Janoff said the mall has established itself as the dominant retail force in the region, drawing business from the entire tri-state region and beyond. More and more tourist busses have been scheduling day trips. He recently saw a bus with 75 ladies on a day trip from Virginia.
Palisades Loew's Theater is one of the top selling in the country, with 21 theaters selling 2 million tickets a year and their Imax is the 3d most successful in the country.
Efforts to lease out the Palisade's "empty attic” will continue in discussions with Clarkstown officials. So far this idea has been voted down in referendums.
Janoff took over as General Manager of the mall in August after experience as an Assistant District Attorney and an owner and manager of real estate firms. This background has helped the GM deal with issues related to the law and legal rights that often come up at the Palisades along with other issues like management of grounds and government relations, he said. |
