Important Announcements Made at Luncheon

While New York Commissioner of Education Richard M. Mills captured the lion share of the attention of RBA members with his talk at the September General Membership Luncheon, important local announcements were also made.

JCC-Y President Says New Facility a "Tremendous Asset to Rockland Citizens" – Capital Needed

Al Samuels gave special recognition to the JCC-Y, first time sponsors of an RBA luncheon. JCC-Y President Brenda Lender announced a $25 million capital drive for its new facility to be based in the old Champion Paper building in West Nyack.

Their current facility is really "busting at the seams," Lender said. Their New Hempstead location, shared with the Jewish Federation of Rockland, is visited by over 1,000 youths weekly and their after school program serves 350.

The proposed building and grounds will have a ballfield, swimming pool, gymnasium, auditorium, fitness center, art center, internet café, community room and a pre-school room for kids with special needs. It will be open to the entire community.

Orangetown Supervisor said the project will "dramatically improve life in Rockland."

Lender said it will improve Rockland business and make a major statement about the County. Sheldon Horowitz of the Safe Harbor Group spontaneously contributed $2,500 to the cause. Some in the room could afford $25, and others, $250,000. Everyone should think about what they could do, he said.

Film on Mental Illness to be Presented at SUNY Rockland

The film "Out of The Shadow," a documentary by Susan Smiley chronicling the travails of her family as her mother Millie battles schizophrenia, will be shown at the SUNY Rockland Cultural Arts Center Wednesday, October 26 at 6:30PM. A panel discussion and question and answer session will follow.

The film project is sponsored by NAMI FAMILYA of Rockland County, the Nathan Kline Institute for Psychiatric Research, the Mental Health Coalition of Rockland and Janssen Pharmaceutica.

Rena Finklestein of the Nathan Kline Institute announced the event to the membership, reminding them that mental health issues, besides making people unhappy, are also a major work productivity issue. Sixty percent of people with mental illness get inadequate treatment, she said.

For information please call NAMI FAMILYA at 845-359-8787 or the Loeb House at 845-735-0575.
