North Rockland High School’s Academy of Finance is seeking the support of the Rockland County business community to expand summer internship opportunities for Academy students.
North Rockland’s Academy of Finance, a member program of the National Academy Foundation, is a two-year, advanced level program for students interested in pursuing a career in the financial services industry after college. In addition to the required academic high school classes, these students take a series of specialized courses during their junior and senior year including Computer Applications, College Accounting, Macroeconomics, International Business, Financial Planning, Financial Services and Securities.
As part of the program, every student is required to complete a five to six week, full-time, paid summer internship at a finance-based worksite. Typical worksites include banks, credit unions, financial planners, accounting firms, finance departments in private industry and governmental agencies, insurance companies, real estate firms, and stock brokerage offices. Student compensation is determined by each individual organization, and all internships are supervised by the Academy’s Director. The time frame for summer internships is June 28, 2010 to August 27, 2010.
Offering Academy students’ salaried internships is a win/win situation for both students and your company. The students gain invaluable hands-on experience and an opportunity to apply their class work to real business situations. By supporting Academy internships your company is not only helping to foster the professional growth of tomorrow’s workforce, you are gaining skilled and motivated staff members.
Dozens of Rockland business organizations have participated as internship providers for Academy students since the program began in September, 2000. The following are comments from two of the many distinguished Academy business partners:
“I wanted to take a moment to thank you for inviting All Bright Electric to participate as an internship employer for the students of the Academy of Finance. We were so impressed with our intern’s maturity and abilities that we asked her to stay on after the completion of her internship. She possessed a skill level equal to a young adult beginning an entry level position.
I believe that the students of the North Rockland Academy of Finance are our future business leaders. I would encourage any business in our community to take advantage of the opportunity to employ any one of the Academy’s young scholars.”
Howard Hellman, Chairman, All Bright Electric
“Abbey Ice and Spring Water is pleased to endorse the North Rockland High School Academy of Finance Internship Program. The Academy produces mature, conscientious young people who need workplace experience to sharpen the business skills taught in school. We at Abbey Ice are happy to provide the workplace component to the students’ education.”
