JCC Rockland will host the JCC Maccabi Games in 2012, a yearly international sporting event for Jewish teens that will bring considerable opportunities to Rockland’s business community. In addition to securing West Point for its opening ceremony, with an anticipated crowd of 10,000-20,000, Rockland County Community College will be the hub of the games, hosting the various activities that are being planned. The entire week-long event is expected to bring in over $5 million for local stores, restaurants and hotels. Over 800 host families throughout the county will open their homes to house and feed the athletes and an additional 1,000 volunteers will help plan all the activities surrounding the week-long games. A live press event linking Tel Aviv and Rockland County will be held on October 31st where David Kirschtel, CEO of JCC Rockland will detail a global community education project, called “Change4Change.” Change4Change will engage students in New York and Israel, who will collect 11 million coins, one million to honor each of the Israeli athletes and coaches killed at the Munich Olympiad of 1972. This project will be a valuable history lesson, as well as an opportunity for students to give back to others less fortunate, in that all coins collected will feed the hungry in Rockland County and Israel. Change4Change is generously sponsored by Active International and Good Samaritan Hospital. Beginning November 1 there will be a week-long series of educational workshops in school districts related to the Games; meetings with government officials, businesses and educators and will conclude with a dinner and torch ceremony, “Rock the Games,” on November 6 at the JCC Rockland. |
